The rising importance of MDUs among Millennials – digital natives who demand more from their internet experience – creates an important opportunity for service providers to deliver Gigabit services. MDU owners see Gigabit broadband resulting in higher rent, occupancy and property values. A 2016 FTTH Council found that Gigabit service grows apartment rents by 8%. However, the MDU market is very complex and multifaceted with the variety of MDU types, stock (age of building), in-building wiring and resident demographics. This has driven the development of new FTTx architectures (FTTLU, FTTF, FTTB etc.) to match each scenario.

To succeed, this session explains the broadband toolkit approach (fibre, Cat5/6, coax, twisted-pair, and especially Wi-Fi) service providers need to adopt, combined with a next-generation Software-Defined Access network architecture to deliver web-scale service flexibility and innovation. Additionally, ADTRAN will explore the key service provider challenges and opportunities located within the rapidly growing MDU market.
